BYD Atto 2 vs MG S5 EV: compare the Nepal variants
Atto 2 Essential and MG S5 Comfort are Rs 1.96 lakh apart. Compare local battery choices, charging limits, parking dimensions and warranty documents.
For a family shopping around Rs 45 lakh, MG S5 Comfort and BYD Atto 2 Essential deserve a look on the same day. Their published base prices are close. Moving to the higher trims, however, creates a different comparison: one adds equipment, another adds battery capacity, and the names are easy to mix up.
The figures here come from Nepal distributor pages checked on 3 October 2026. We have not conducted a comparative road test. Where the sources disagree or do not describe a trim fully, we say so.
Match the trim before comparing the price
| Nepal variant | Listed vehicle price | Stated battery capacity | WLTP claim |

| MG S5 Comfort, 49 kWh COM | Rs 43,99,000 | 49.1 kWh in the technical table | 340 km |
| BYD Atto 2 Essential | Rs 45,95,000 | 45.12 kWh | 312 km |
| BYD Atto 2 Premium | Rs 48,99,000 | 51.13 kWh | 345 km |
| MG S5 Luxury, 49 kWh LUX | Rs 50,99,000 | 49.1 kWh | 340 km |
| MG S5 Luxury, 62 kWh LUX | Rs 55,99,000 | 62.2 kWh | 430 km |

The MG website uses Comfort, Deluxe and Luxury in different places. The battery-and-trim labels in the table above follow its priced product sections. Use those together on a quotation, so “Luxury” cannot be mistaken for a particular battery.
Cimex also lists an Atto 2 Superior at Rs 51,99,999, with 51.13 kWh and a 345 km claim. The linked brochure covers Essential and Premium. We have not assigned Premium's equipment to Superior or assumed the extra price buys more range. Obtain the separate Nepal equipment sheet if that is the version offered.
What each step up costs
At the base prices, MG S5 Comfort is Rs 1.96 lakh cheaper than Atto 2 Essential. Comfort also carries the larger stated battery in that pair. This makes it worth inspecting before paying more simply because a different car has a familiar badge.
Atto 2 Premium costs Rs 3.04 lakh above Essential. Its listed battery increases by 6.01 kWh and its WLTP claim rises by 33 km. Check the local equipment list to see whether anything else in your quote changes.
Moving from MG S5 Comfort to 49 kWh Luxury costs Rs 7 lakh, while the listed battery and range stay the same. Paramount's feature table assigns items such as a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera and power tailgate to LUX rather than COM. That is principally an equipment decision.
The next MG step, from 49 kWh LUX to 62 kWh LUX, is Rs 5 lakh for another 13.1 kWh of stated capacity and a 90 km increase in its WLTP claim. If long trips are the reason for spending more, compare that change with the actual charging stops you use.
These differences are calculated from vehicle prices. Insurance, registration, installation and any written offer can change the delivered comparison.
MG is longer; BYD lists more clearance
The Nepal Atto 2 brochure gives 4,310 mm length, 1,830 mm width and 2,620 mm wheelbase. The MG page gives 4,476 mm, 1,849 mm and 2,730 mm. MG's body is 166 mm longer and 19 mm wider by those figures. A 19 mm width difference is unlikely to settle a parking question by itself; mirror width and door clearance still need checking.
MG's stated boot volume is 453 litres, against 380 litres for Atto 2. Take your usual luggage to both showrooms. A family using child seats cannot routinely count folded-seat capacity as available boot space.
BYD lists 200 mm ground clearance. MG lists 175 mm for COM and 180 mm for LUX, with a footnote marker. These are supplier figures, not measurements we made with passengers aboard. Load, wheelbase and bumper shape affect whether a car catches your basement ramp or a raised road edge.
Ask to try your own difficult entrance during a test drive. A ground-clearance advantage on a sheet does not make a car suitable for driving through floodwater or over a badly damaged road.
The larger charging number needs the right station
Cimex's brochure lists 7 kW AC and 82 kW CCS2 DC for Essential and Premium. Paramount lists 7 kW AC, approximately 120 kW DC for the 49 kWh versions and 150 kW for the 62 kWh version. Those are power limits, not the rate maintained throughout a session.
At a station limited to 50 kW, neither car can obtain its higher headline rate. If two connectors share a station's power, the available rate may be lower still. Battery temperature and charge level also affect what the car accepts.
A useful comparison is the energy added while you eat or take a break. A hypothetical session averaging 40 kW for 20 minutes adds about 13.3 kWh before allowing for losses. Whether that is sufficient depends on the next leg of your journey. It does not depend on which brochure prints the larger peak.
The MG page quotes 10–80% times of 24 minutes for the smaller battery and 26 minutes for the larger one. Treat them as supplier claims under suitable conditions. Do not use them as waiting-time promises for a particular Nepal station. Ask about local demonstrations and check the connector on the car you will receive.
For home charging, both listed 7 kW rates need an installation and electricity supply capable of providing them. If you can only arrange a lower-power overnight supply, calculate the daily energy you need to replace before spending on a wall box. Our home-charging guide covers the site assessment.
Front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive do not choose for you
The local BYD brochure specifies front-wheel drive; the MG page specifies rear-wheel drive. Neither layout guarantees grip on a wet road. Tyres, surface, load and driver inputs still matter.
MG lists independent rear suspension, while BYD's sheet lists a torsion beam. The suspension layout is a reason to compare the ride over your usual rough section. It is not a measured comfort result. Ride slowly over the same surface with rear passengers in place, then ask them what they felt.
Also try the controls without the salesperson doing everything. Can you select the demister quickly? Is the camera useful in your parking light? Does a warning sound become distracting on the road you actually drive? A feature being fitted and a feature being helpful are separate questions.
Read the warranty documents carefully
Paramount's warranty page currently lists one year for the vehicle, five years/100,000 km for the drive motor and eight years/150,000 km for the high-voltage battery, subject to its terms. The S5 product page shows a different high-voltage-components period. Ask which signed policy covers your vehicle.
Its extended battery programme describes eligibility conditions, authorised servicing and continuous insurance. It excludes external water ingress and accident damage. A long battery headline does not extend every part of the car for the same duration.
For BYD, obtain the current Nepal policy with separate vehicle, motor and battery coverage. A short summary on a product page is insufficient to judge exclusions, commercial use or the process for a claim.
Check the workshop closest to where you live, its appointment process and how accident-repair parts are supplied. The Nepal MG S5 distributor used for this comparison is Paramount Motors; GO Automobiles' Comet/Windsor pages cover a different MG lineup. Contact the distributor for the model you are buying.
A sensible order for the showroom visits
Start with S5 Comfort and Atto 2 Essential if purchase cost is the main constraint. Try seating, luggage and your parking entrance before moving up either range. Comfort's lower listed price leaves money that you might need for insurance or charging work.
If you want the Atto 2's footprint and the additional battery of Premium, compare its quote with S5 Comfort as well as LUX. There is no requirement to choose equally named trims. Buy the equipment you use rather than matching badges.
For frequent intercity journeys, S5's 62 kWh version merits a separate budget discussion. Its higher price should solve a recurring range or charging problem. Paying for it solely for a rare holiday is a different household trade-off.
Keep the final quotations beside your route plan. Our BYD list, MG list and charging map are useful starting points; confirm the exact car and today's charging arrangements before booking.
