EV breakdown in Nepal: tow, puncture or 12V fault
A short tow in Kathmandu starts around Rs 7,000. What matters more is whether your EV can roll, and whether the truck can carry all four wheels.
A short tow inside Kathmandu Valley is advertised from Rs 7,000. Towing Sukta gives that local starting price, and Towing Nepal publishes Rs 7,500 for up to 30 km; both were checked on 2 November 2026. The price is only part of the call. Before the truck leaves, the operator needs to know whether your car can roll, because a powered-down EV may not release its parking brake.
Recovery moves the car to a workshop or charger. It does not diagnose the fault. The equipment that arrives should match the reason the car stopped: a puncture you can seal at the roadside, a low 12V battery that leaves the controls dead, or damage that stopped the car without warning.
The detailed procedure comes from the Punch EV manual, a Nepal-sold model whose owner's manual is public. Other brands have their own service desks. The questions to ask are the same.
What a tow costs in Nepal
Two Kathmandu operators publish rates. Their short-tow prices are close.
| Operator | Published rate | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Towing Nepal | Rs 7,500 up to 30 km. 30–60 km: Rs 7,500 + Rs 180/km. 60–200 km: Rs 7,500 + Rs 155/km. Above 200 km: Rs 140/km. 10% discount for its roadside assistance members. | 9802305050; office 9823025907 |
| Towing Sukta | Local towing inside Kathmandu Valley from Rs 7,000. Long-distance towing quoted by distance. | 9851134340, 9851087074, 9801971038 |
Sources: Towing Nepal and Towing Sukta, both checked 2 November 2026. Neither page gives a date for its rate card, and neither lists loading, waiting or toll charges. Ask about those before you agree to a price.
The long-distance formula needs one question. Towing Nepal's page does not say whether the per-kilometre rate applies to the whole distance or only to the distance above the start of each band. A 60 km tow is Rs 18,300 if all 60 km are charged at Rs 180 (7,500 + 10,800). It is Rs 12,900 if only the 30 km above the first band is charged (7,500 + 5,400). Both readings fit the published line. Ask the dispatcher which one they use, and get the total before the truck leaves.
A dealer package can change the bill, but not by a simple distance rule. Tata's Punch EV manual says the 24x7 roadside assistance programme is included during the warranty period and covers towing to the nearest Tata EV service centre for non-accident cases. Towing past that centre is charged at actual cost, and accident towing is paid by the customer (Punch EV owner manual, pp. 266–267, checked 2 November 2026). That is a manufacturer's programme. It does not promise that every breakdown is free.
Can the car roll?
This is the first thing a recovery operator needs to know, and the first thing a driver usually cannot answer. A car can have a full traction battery and still refuse to move because its 12V battery is flat. The display may stay dark, the electronic parking brake may stay on, and the car may refuse to go into neutral.
The Punch EV manual is unusually direct about this. It says the electric parking brake must be released before towing, and that a healthy battery allows a manual release with the ignition kept on until the car reaches a Tata EV service centre. If the battery is not healthy, external power is needed to release the brake. If the ignition cannot stay on, the manual describes holding the EPB button in the release position with the brake pedal pressed while switching off, to stop the brake re-engaging (pp. 248–249).
It also says not to jump start the car. If the 12V battery is completely discharged, the manual sends the owner to a Tata EV service centre. Do not remove rear caliper parts to make the car roll; the manual says that damages them. A recovery operator may need a power pack, wheel skates or a winch, and those are decisions for someone following the car's own procedure.
A flat 12V battery is not the same as a flat traction battery. The 12V battery guide explains what to record before you call, including whether the car responded to the key at all. That information changes what the operator brings.
What a flatbed load should look like
For the Punch EV, the manual recommends towing with the driving wheels off the ground or carrying the car on a flatbed. It warns against towing with the front wheels on the ground or all four wheels rolling, because the front wheels drive the car and turning them can damage the transmission (p. 249).
The tow hook screws into the front bumper, clockwise, and the manual says to remove it afterwards. A winch line through that hook can pull the car up the ramps. Once the car is on the deck, the operator should strap or chock all four wheels. The parking brake stays released and the car stays in neutral during the winch, as the manual requires.
The manual's 20–30 km/h limit applies to towing with a wrecker or a rigid tow bar. It does not apply to a car carried on a flatbed. It also says to switch on the hazard lights of both vehicles and not to get under a car after a tow truck has lifted it. Say these details to the operator when the truck arrives.
A rope tow with the front wheels rolling is the arrangement this car's manual rules out. If a driver suggests it because the road is too narrow for the truck, the safer answer is to move the truck to a wider point and winch the car there, or to use skates under the wheels. That may take longer. It avoids a transmission repair on top of a recovery bill.
Punctures: what a sealant kit can and cannot do
The Punch EV lists two compressor-and-sealant kit options, depending on equipment. Other EVs may be delivered with a spare, a kit or neither, so check your own boot. The kit is a temporary repair. It does not replace the tyre.
| Damage or situation | What the Punch EV manual says |
|---|---|
| Nail or screw hole up to 6 mm across, in the visible tread | The kit may seal it temporarily |
| Sidewall damage, cracks or a bulge | Do not inflate or use the kit |
| Tyre already driven while flat or underinflated | Do not use the kit |
| After a successful seal | Maximum 80 km/h and 200 km, then replace the tyre |
| First check after sealing | Drive 3–10 km, stop and check the pressure |
| Sealant past its expiry date | Replace the bottle; the kit may not work properly |
| TPMS warning after using the kit | Have the system checked at a Tata EV service centre |
Source: Punch EV owner manual, pp. 235–240, checked 2 November 2026. The 6 mm limit, 80 km/h limit and 200 km limit are the manual's figures for this car. They do not apply to every EV.
The kit also needs the car's 12V socket to run the compressor, so a flat 12V battery can leave you with a usable tyre and no way to inflate it. Read the kit instructions in the boot before a long drive, and check the sealant date. The monsoon tyre guide covers what a pothole impact can do beyond the puncture itself.
Do not crawl under a car held up by a jack. Use the jacking points in your own manual, and let a workshop lift a car with a damaged wheel or a battery warning. If the wheel or tyre is damaged, or the car is in a live traffic lane, recovery is the better choice. If the breakdown follows a collision, the accident repair guide covers what to check on the body and parts.
Running out of charge
An empty traction battery is a recovery job with a different destination. Tell the operator whether you need a charger or a workshop. A tow to a 30 kW charger gets you to a charger. A tow to a service centre gets the car to a place where it can be tested.
Towing Nepal published an undated article offering a 50% discount to EV owners who need a tow because the battery is empty. The article gives 9802305050 as the contact, but it carries no date and no end date. Ask whether the discount still applies before you rely on it (Towing Nepal EV discount article, checked 2 November 2026).
The public charging list is a directory. It cannot tell you whether a charger is free right now. Of its 392 records, 68 name a CCS2 connector with a DC rating. Of those 68, 49 are rated at 30 kW and 19 at 60 kW (BijuliMotor charging-station list, checked 23 September 2026). That matters for the destination: half an hour at a 30 kW site is 15 kWh at most, before charging losses.
Check the plug before you choose the destination. A charger with the wrong connector is no use, and a site listed at 60 kW may share that rating between CCS2 and GB/T. The charging-stations tool shows the record and, where listed, a contact number; call the operator before the truck sets off. The charging-plugs guide explains the connector types.
The height problem at the ramps
A flatbed is only useful if the car can get onto it. Ground clearance is a rough screen for that. It does not guarantee the car will clear the ramps. The BijuliMotor catalogue lists 161 current passenger variants with a listed clearance above zero. The median is 181 mm, 44 list 170 mm or less, and 13 list 150 mm or less.
A low car can still be loaded, but ramp length, approach angle, tyre profile and suspension height all matter. The operator should bring ramps long enough for the car. The number to give the dispatcher is the clearance on your own car's specification sheet. Do not guess from the showroom. If the car has adjustable suspension, say which height it is stuck at.
Who to call
Save these numbers offline before a long drive. Phone numbers and service arrangements change, so confirm the number when you save it.

Sipradi's September 2025 Dashain notice listed regional mobile numbers for charging, breakdown and service support. It is a historical notice, so use the main numbers above and ask for the officer on duty. The notice does not list current dispatchers. (Sipradi Dashain notice, checked 2 November 2026).
What to say on the call
Give the operator the model, the colour and the registration number. Then answer four questions: can the car power on, can it steer, can it release the parking brake, and are the wheels straight. Add the fault, the road width, the slope, any overhead wire or tree, and whether passengers are still inside.
A map pin is useful, but you need more detail. It can land on the opposite carriageway or on a road a truck cannot enter. Say which side of the road you are on and which approach is wide enough. Photograph the access from a safe place, not from the traffic lane.
Ask who authorises the tow, where the car will be taken, what the extra distance costs, and whether the operator can carry passengers. For a warranty job, confirm that the destination is an authorised service centre. For an insurance job, confirm whether the insurer pays the operator directly or reimburses you.
Warranty, insurance and roadside assistance are separate
Warranty, roadside assistance and insurance are separate contracts. A warranty can pay for a failed part without paying for the tow, and an insurance policy can cover accident damage without covering a mechanical breakdown. A roadside assistance package sits between them and has its own limits.
The Punch EV manual shows the pattern. Its roadside programme is tied to TVS AA and is included during the warranty period. It covers towing to the nearest Tata EV service centre for non-accident cases, but charges beyond that are paid at actual cost. Accident towing is the customer's cost, and the exclusions include fire, theft, vandalism and floods (pp. 266–267).
The manual's roadside chapter is written for India. It lists response times by Indian state and prints the toll-free number 1800 209 8282. That is not a Nepal number. Use Sipradi's Nepal line and ask whether the same programme and towing limit apply to a car bought here.
Read the policy wording before you need it. The questions that change the bill are: does it cover a breakdown with no collision, is there a distance limit, who authorises the recovery, does it pay the operator directly, and does it cover a car used commercially. Keep the written terms in the car or on your phone. A dealer's verbal assurance does not replace the policy.
Questions owners ask
How much does an EV tow cost in Kathmandu?
A local short tow is advertised from Rs 7,000 by Towing Sukta and Rs 7,500 for up to 30 km by Towing Nepal, checked 2 November 2026. Longer tows rise with distance, and neither published card includes loading, waiting or tolls.
Can I tow an EV with a rope?
For the Punch EV, the manual says no if the front wheels or all four wheels would roll on the ground. Use a flatbed or lift the driving wheels. The manual allows a wrecker or rigid tow bar at 20–30 km/h, with hazards on, but a flatbed is the cleaner choice for a car that cannot release its parking brake.
The car is dead and the parking brake will not release. What now?
Tell the operator before dispatch. The Punch EV manual says a low 12V battery needs external power to release the EPB, and it says not to jump start the car. A flatbed with a winch, or skates under the wheels, may be needed. Do not remove brake caliper parts.
Does the Punch EV have a spare tyre?
It lists two puncture repair kit options, and a spare may depend on the variant or the equipment fitted. The BijuliMotor catalogue does not record which cars have a spare, a kit or neither. Open the boot and read the label on the kit before you travel.
Is towing covered by the warranty?
Tata's roadside programme covers towing to the nearest Tata EV service centre for non-accident cases during the warranty period. Towing beyond that point and accident towing are charged. Insurance is a separate contract, so check both.
