If your EV dealer changes, who handles the warranty?
The warranty belongs to the company named in the booklet, not the showroom. Keep the invoice, VIN and service records ready if a dealer changes in Nepal.
The warranty is a promise from the company named in the booklet. The showroom that sold you the car is a separate party. BijuliMotor's catalogue lists 172 current EV variants against 31 dealer companies. MG's 16 are split between two of them: 10 under Paramount Motors and 6 under GO Automobiles (dealer fields checked 3 October 2026; company pages checked 2 November 2026). Both sell under the MG name. The booklet for your car points to one of them.
The seller, the importer and the warranty issuer
Three organisations can sit behind one vehicle. The dealer sells it, the importer or distributor brings it into Nepal and often issues the Nepal warranty, and the manufacturer builds it. In a small market one company often does two of those jobs, so the documents show which role each one holds.
| Role | Document that names it | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Seller | Invoice and payment receipt | Which company took your money? |
| Importer or distributor | Warranty booklet, registration papers | Which company backs the Nepal warranty? |
| Warranty issuer | Warranty booklet or certificate | Who promises the repair? |
| Authorised workshop | Service booklet, issuer's website or letter | Who can diagnose this model and battery? |
| Finance provider | Loan agreement | Does a repair or ownership transfer need notice? |
Hyundai's Nepal conditions show how clearly a distributor can write itself into the promise. Laxmi Intercontinental's warranty page says cover is provided for a Hyundai "originally distributed by LXIPL" and sold by LXIPL or its authorised dealers in Nepal. The conditions say the cover is generally transferable to later owners. A claim needs the owner's manual, service booklet and warranty certificate, and repairs outside the authorised network are excluded (Laxmi Hyundai conditions, checked 2 November 2026).
MG shows the split from another angle. Paramount Motors calls itself the authorised importer and distributor of MG vehicles in Nepal and publishes warranty terms for the MG4, MGS5, MGS6 and IM6 (Paramount's MG site, warranty page, checked 2 November 2026). GO Automobiles calls itself an authorised JSW MG Motor dealer and lists the Comet and Windsor (GO Automobiles, dealer page, checked 2 November 2026). Paramount's warranty page lists those four models. The Comet and Windsor are absent from that page. If you buy one of those, ask GO which booklet applies and who signs the claim.
MG's split is in the catalogue too. This is who it names for some common brands, with the website it records (the EV price list has the full set):
| Brand | Company named in the catalogue | Current variants | Website recorded |
|---|---|---|---|
| MG | Paramount Motors | 10 | mgmotors.com.np |
| MG | GO Automobiles | 6 | mgmotor.com.np |
| BYD | Cimex Inc. | 13 | cimex.com.np |
| Tata | Sipradi Trading | 7 | tatacars.sipradi.com.np |
| Hyundai | Laxmi Intercontinental | 10 | laxmihyundai.com |
| Deepal | MAW Vriddhi Autocorp | 13 | mawnepal.com |
| Mahindra | Agni Incorporated | 10 | None recorded |
| Wuling | EV Nepal Motors | 6 | wuling.com.np |
Counts are current variants with a price in the catalogue. The dealer field names sellers and says nothing about warranty issuers. 59 of the 172 current listings have no dealer website recorded, so ask for the booklet before you rely on the name in a price list. The Wuling row records the catalogue rather than the current website: wulingnepal.com.np is now run by Paramount Motors, while the older wuling.com.np still names EV Nepal Motors.
The websites carry contact numbers. Paramount lists 9801155179 and [email protected]. GO lists 980-1020062 and a Dhobighat service centre on 9801221882. Hyundai's call centre is 01-5970226 (all checked 2 November 2026).
Sometimes the question is not who took over from whom, but whether the seller was authorised at all. In August 2025, LRR Motors introduced the Geely EX5 in Nepal. The BijuliMotor catalogue lists the model as the Galaxy EX5. Proton International and Jagadamba Motors then issued a joint statement saying Geely had not appointed an official or authorised seller of Geely-branded vehicles in Nepal. TechLekh reported the statement on 20 August 2025. The report, citing company officials, said the cars sold through LRR could not rely on the official warranty, parts or certified service (TechLekh report, checked 2 November 2026). The BijuliMotor catalogue marks both Galaxy EX5 listings as disputed. That is an authorisation dispute. It is not a court ruling on anyone's warranty. It is still a Nepal example of why the company on the invoice matters before you pay.
The catalogue also flags weaker records. Of the 172 current listings, 160 have a dealer confirmed in the catalogue, 10 rest on a report that names the company but no company page confirms it, and two are disputed. Before treating a price-list entry as an authorised dealer, check the seller's own site and the warranty booklet.
What a dealer change does not automatically do
A new showroom sign does not transfer the old company's promises. If the same company moves to a new address, the warranty is unchanged, but the claim address may change. If a different company takes over the brand, it may agree to support cars sold before its appointment. That is a decision it has to state, so ask for the scope in writing: which VINs, which previous importer, which terms, and from what date.
Wuling is the clearest live example, and the public record is unfinished. The catalogue records EV Nepal Motors and wuling.com.np for six Wuling variants. On 2 November 2026 that site still called EV Nepal Motors, a Bajra Group company, the sole distributor and showed only the Air EV. A second site, wulingnepal.com.np, is run by Paramount Motors: its website terms are dated 23 September 2026, its price list 21 September 2026, and its news page calls Paramount the authorised distributor of Wuling in Nepal (terms, price list, news item, checked 2 November 2026). Neither site listed warranty terms for cars sold before the change. If you bought an Air EV from EV Nepal Motors, ask Paramount in writing which VINs it covers and which workshop will take the claim.
Whether a new company has a legal duty to honour an old warranty depends on the contract and on Nepal law. A general answer cannot settle that for a particular car. What you can do is make the question specific and get the answer in writing before you agree to pay for a repair.
An imported used car adds another layer. If it came through a private seller or a parallel importer, the official distributor may not recognise it for a Nepal warranty. Trace the original invoice and warranty registration before you assume cover. Our guide to reading a used EV's battery health report covers the battery side of that check, and the battery warranty guide explains why the years and kilometres in the headline are not the whole promise.
The same name can appear on a charger
The company that sold the car may also be the name on a public charger. Of the 392 charging records in the BijuliMotor directory, checked on 23 September 2026, 114 name Tata (Sipradi) as the installer, 98 name CG Motors and 51 name Cimex Inc. (BYD). The list is a directory and cannot show whether a charger is free right now. It also does not say who will operate a site after a distributor change. If a charger on your regular route carries the name of the company that sold you the car, ask the operator whether access or billing changes too. The charging-station directory lists the sites; call ahead.
The one-page warranty folder
Keep one folder, paper and digital, with these eight items. The list follows what Nepal warranty pages ask for, including Hyundai's conditions, and what a distributor needs to trace a VIN.
| Item | What it proves | Check before you file it |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice and payment receipt | The legal seller, date, price and VIN | Company name matches the warranty registration |
| Warranty booklet or certificate | The issuer, start date and claim contact | Model and VIN are correct; note "whichever is earlier" |
| Owner's manual and service booklet | The service schedule and service history | Every service has a date, odometer and workshop record |
| Service job cards and invoices | Maintenance history and which workshop did the work | Fault reported, parts used and mileage are legible |
| Registration and VIN | The car is registered in Nepal and the owner matches your papers | Redact your ID before sharing a copy |
| Fault record | Date, odometer, warning text and symptoms | Photos or video have a visible timestamp |
| Written correspondence | Who said what, and when | Keep the claim reference and the full email thread |
| Loan or insurance papers | Whether a repair or transfer needs notice | Check the clause before you change owner or insurer |
Two habits make the folder usable. Keep the version you were given at delivery. A photo of a screen in the showroom is a weaker record. Redact your citizenship or passport number and the full VIN before you post a complaint in a public group, and send the full copies to the issuer through its official channel.
If you are taking delivery of a new car, use the delivery inspection checklist to confirm that the booklet, invoice and VIN all agree. If the car changes hands later, the EV app and data handover guide covers the account access that a change of owner or dealer can also affect.
Making the first claim after a change
Write to the issuer. A message to the salesperson's mobile is easy to lose. A short message with the right details can get a reference number, and the reference number makes the next call easier.
- Open the booklet and write down the issuer's name, the warranty start date and the claim contact.
- Send the claim to the issuer's published address or form. If the seller is still trading, copy the seller.
- Include the VIN, invoice date, registration number, odometer and a short description of the fault. Attach photos of the warning and the odometer.
- Ask two questions: who accepts warranty claims for this VIN today, and which workshop is authorised for this model and battery.
- Keep the reply. If the answer comes by phone, ask for it by email or in a letter.
A first message can be short:
Subject: Warranty claim and authorised workshop, VIN [number]
I bought a [model] from [company] on [date], invoice [number]. The warranty booklet names [issuer] as the provider. Please confirm who accepts a warranty claim for this VIN and which workshop is authorised to diagnose and repair it. Please reply with a claim reference.
Keep a timeline as the claim moves:
| Event | What to record |
|---|---|
| Fault first noticed | Date, symptoms, odometer, photo or video |
| Claim reported | Who received it, date and reference number |
| Vehicle inspected | Job card, findings and tests requested |
| Coverage decision | Covered or refused, the clause and any amount |
| Delay or missing part | Stated reason and the next update date |
| Repair completed | Parts, labour, date returned and any remaining fault |
Ask for the refusal clause in writing. "Not covered" without a clause and a technical reason is hard to challenge and easy to repeat. The spare-parts and accident repair guide covers the parts side of a repair.
If the car is off the road
Warranty and transport are separate promises. Hyundai's Nepal conditions exclude loss of use, inconvenience and commercial loss. A covered repair can still leave you paying for a taxi, a rental or missed work.
For a budget, assume Rs 800 a day for a replacement car or hired transport. That is an assumption. A Kathmandu rental quote may be different.
| Days without the car | Cost at an assumed Rs 800 a day |
|---|---|
| 7 | Rs 5,600 |
| 30 | Rs 24,000 |
| 60 | Rs 48,000 |
If the car earns money, check the commercial-use clause before you buy. Hyundai's conditions exclude taxi service and short- or long-term hire. Other brands write their own exclusions. The electric taxi operating cost guide starts with the empty kilometres that a warranty claim will not repay.
If the company says no
Escalate in writing, and say what you want: a diagnosis, a coverage decision, a part, or a repair that fixes the fault. Attach the folder and the claim reference so the next person can follow the history without asking you to repeat it.
Nepal's Consumer Protection Act, 2075 is on the Law Commission site (checked 2 November 2026). The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection runs an online goods and services complaint form (checked 2 November 2026). It asks for your name, address, contact number and email; the shop or organisation name and address; the complaint subject and details; and supporting files as PDF, JPG or PNG up to 5 MB. The acknowledgement is your dated proof that the complaint was filed.
A complaint is not a guarantee of a refund or a repair. The Act is the legal reference, but whether your facts qualify is a legal question. For an expensive repair, a short consultation with a Nepal lawyer is worth it before you sign a settlement.
Questions buyers ask
Who handles the warranty if my dealer closes?
The issuer named in the booklet. In Nepal that is often the importer or distributor. The showroom may be a different company. Write to its published claim contact and ask which workshop is authorised for your VIN.
Does a new distributor have to honour the old distributor's warranty?
Not automatically. It may agree to support cars sold before its appointment, but it has to state that in writing. Ask for the scope: which VINs, which previous importer, which terms and from what date. Whether there is a legal duty depends on the contract and Nepal law.
What if I bought from a parallel importer?
The official distributor may not recognise the car for a Nepal warranty. Check the original invoice and warranty registration before assuming cover. The 2025 Geely EX5 dispute is an example of a seller's authorisation being contested.
Which papers should I keep?
The invoice, payment receipt, warranty booklet, owner's manual, service booklet, job cards, registration and written correspondence. Hyundai's Nepal conditions ask for the manual, service booklet and warranty certificate at a claim.
Can I use an independent workshop?
Check your booklet first. Hyundai's Nepal conditions exclude repairs carried out outside its authorised dealer or service centre. Other brands set their own rules.
