EV loans in Nepal: fixed rates, floating rates and fees
A lower EMI can hide a longer loan or a temporary interest rate. Compare down payment, fees, resets and total repayment using a worked example.
The showroom board gives you a monthly instalment. Your bank account will eventually see a down payment, fees, insurance, instalments and possibly a new interest rate. Before choosing a car around the first number, ask to see the whole repayment schedule.
A Nepal EV loan can be useful without being cheap. The right comparison is between written offers for the same loan amount and term, with clear treatment of the interest-rate changes. A dealer's illustration is not the bank's approval.
First work out how much cash you need
Nabil's published auto-loan page, reviewed during this article's research, lists financing up to 60% of the VAT bill for a new private EV, subject to its conditions. It separately describes commercial EV finance. These are that bank's published product terms, not a guarantee that every applicant receives the maximum or that every bank offers the same arrangement.
If a car's eligible bill is Rs 40 lakh and a bank lends 60%, the loan is Rs 24 lakh. The remaining Rs 16 lakh must come from the buyer before accounting for other costs. Ask whether registration, insurance, charger installation and fees are financed or paid separately.
The eligible bill or valuation can also differ from the amount you expect. For a used car, financing may use an assessed value and impose an age limit. A seller's asking price is not automatically the bank's valuation.
See what the term does to repayment
Take a hypothetical Rs 24 lakh loan at a constant 9% annual rate, paid monthly on a reducing balance. The figures below exclude fees and assume the rate never changes.
| Term | Approximate monthly EMI | Total interest over the term |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | Rs 49,820 | Rs 5.89 lakh |
| 7 years | Rs 38,614 | Rs 8.44 lakh |
The seven-year option reduces the monthly burden by roughly Rs 11,200 but adds about Rs 2.55 lakh in interest. Rounding can change the final payment slightly. The bank's schedule governs the actual contract.
A longer term may be necessary to keep enough cash for other household expenses. Compare the extra interest with the monthly room it gives you. A car loan should not leave a family unable to handle an ordinary medical bill or a period of lower income.
“Fixed” needs a duration
Ask whether the advertised rate is fixed for the entire term, fixed for an introductory period or floating from the start. If it resets, what determines the new rate? How often can it change? Does the EMI change, does the term extend, or can both happen?
For the same Rs 24 lakh over five years, a constant 11% example rate gives an EMI of about Rs 52,182 instead of Rs 49,820 at 9%. That two-percentage-point difference adds about Rs 2,360 a month. A real mid-loan reset applies to the outstanding balance and remaining term, so it needs a separate calculation.
Ask for a higher-rate illustration as well as the advertised one. It should show how repayment changes under the contract's reset rule. Do not infer that a floating loan will become cheaper because rates fell during a different period.
Nepal Rastra Bank publishes policy and regulatory material. Use the current directive relevant to your agreement if a regulatory claim is disputed. An old policy screenshot is not enough to settle a new loan.
Fees change the opening cost
Nabil's English product table lists a loan-administration fee of 0.75%, along with other charges and conditions. Its Nepali page gives different fees for some categories, so confirm which terms apply to your offer. On the hypothetical Rs 24 lakh, 0.75% is Rs 18,000. Confirm the effective fee, taxes and deductions in the written offer rather than assuming the webpage is the final contract.
Ask about credit-information charges, valuation costs where relevant, insurance requirements and the expense of transferring the loan. If a dealer says “zero processing fee”, find out who is waiving which charge and whether the offer changes the interest rate or vehicle discount.
Prepayment deserves attention before signing. A buyer may receive a bonus, remittance or proceeds from another asset and want to reduce the balance. Find out whether partial repayment is allowed, what it costs and whether it reduces the EMI or term. Fixed-rate and floating-rate contracts may treat it differently.
Commercial use needs the right loan
A taxi operator should tell the lender how the car will be used. A private-car offer may have different eligibility, term and documentation from commercial finance. The Nabil product page expressly separates those categories and describes income evidence requirements.
Do not rely on an app's gross trip total as monthly take-home income. Deduct energy, commission, maintenance, driver costs and days without revenue before judging what instalment the business can support. The bank may require evidence that does not appear in the app.
Compare offers on one sheet
Record the cash needed now, loan principal, rate type, introductory period, term, EMI, fees, insurance conditions, prepayment terms and total repayment under the stated assumptions. Use the same vehicle quote for every bank.
You can compare the monthly repayments in our EMI calculator, using the rate and term from each written offer. Then make a household budget with a difficult month as well as a normal month. An affordable EMI is one that still fits when the car needs tyres or income arrives late. Keep the bank's repayment schedule alongside that budget before paying a non-refundable vehicle deposit.
